of why their baby keeps crying between 3 to 5 months of age.
Perhaps, this is where we say that it is important to know the key symptoms to lookout whether your child is
crying due to colic or not. So, look for these key symptoms and judge whether your child has colic and
then be ready to soothe him.
Different And Constant Cry
The first and the foremost symptom of recognizing a colic baby is to see how he cries. Unlike normal cries, a
colicky baby cries constantly, considerably and consistently. If you watch out for these three C’s in your baby
cries, then your baby is colicky.
- Colicky babies often cry for up to 3 hours.
- In severe cases, babies cry for up to 5 hours non-stop when colicky.
Check Baby’s Movements
Another way of determining whether your baby is colic or not is to check his movements. Since, colic is a state of
pain and discomfort for a baby, his movements will tell you a lot about his sufferings. Look out for the
following movements:
- Whether the baby is pulling his legs towards the abdomen and squeezing them.
- Whether your baby is holding his hands and legs and crying aloud.
- Whether your baby is clenching the fists and trashing around due to severe pain.
Fussiness And Sleeplessness
Other key symptoms of determining whether a baby has colic are observing his fussiness and sleeplessness. With
colic, a baby won’t feel comfortable enough to sleep a whole night. He will be in constant pain and will be so
fussy to handle. He will not even eat or open his mouth.
Hormonal Changes And Intolerance
Look out for hormonal changes in your baby that may not be visible to you but when you will take your baby to a
child specialist, he will tell you the reason of your baby’s colic is his hormonal changes. Apart from this, babies
are often colicky due to intolerance with cow’s milk or powdered milk.
A simple way to check this symptom is to observe whether your child starts colicky when you changed his feed
from mother’s milk to powdered or formula food.
Observe Your Family Environment
Many parents can never even imagine that the reason for their baby’s colic is their family environment. So, check
out or rather observe whether your family members are too aggressive or excited because this will affect the baby
as well and he will feel uncomfortable in their presence and may become colicky. In some cases, when your home
suddenly becomes peaceful the baby feels a change and becomes colicky.
So, the next time you see your child crying constantly, you will now be able to recognize whether the symptoms are
colicky or not.
